"I still
remember the first night I slept in my new home was in
the Belmont Room. I felt as if I had entered another world
and time." - Nick the Innkeeper |
The Belmont Room was the historic
bedroom and office of George Mason Junior, who followed
in his father's footsteps as a well known architect of
his time. The room is named after the Belmont family. Mrs. Caroline Belmont, daughter of Commodore Matthew
Perry, commissioned George Champlin Mason to build the
Belmont Estate called
By-the-Sea which was completed in 1860.
Unfortunately, the building was demolished in 1946 and
the land was combined with that of
Rosecliff Masion,
which is still open for tours through the
Newport Preservation
Society.
Caroline married August Belmont, a Rothschild bank agent
and prior poor, Hessian Jew who came to America and used
his Rothschild connections to build his fortune. Their
son, Oliver commission Richard Morris Hunt to build the
famous French Renaissance-gothic mansion "Belcourt Castle" as a
replica of Louis the XIII hunting lodge in Versailles.
The sixty room mansion soon became the quarters of his
new wife, Alva Vanderbilt-Belmont, and is now owned by harle Tinney, a dear acquaintance of the innkeepers, who
has the mansion open for tours.
“This place is heaven on earth.”

Comfort fit for a king in our Belmont Room. This is one of our most
popular rooms. This richly decorated room has a Queen
Canopy Bed with a extra thick/ extra comfortable pillow-top mattress, working fireplace, television with
DVD and VCR, CD Player, Private
bath ensuite, shower for two that opens to the room and
two, cozy, wing-back chairs
for relaxing after a day of sightseeing. Though perfect
for a relaxing romantic escapade, the Belmont Room's
unique set up also makes it perfect for a single or
couple "on the go" (perhaps on a business trip or
attending a wedding). |
